Step-by-Step Instructions for Saltine Toffee
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a 10x15-inch baking sheet with foil or parchment paper. Arrange a full layer of saltine crackers on the prepared pan.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup unsalted butter and 1 cup light brown sugar over medium heat. Stir frequently until melted, then bring to a rolling boil for 3 minutes while stirring.
  3. Carefully pour the toffee over the arranged saltine crackers and spread it evenly.
  4. Bake for 5 minutes, watching for the toffee to bubble and develop a glossy surface.
  5. Remove from oven and sprinkle 2 cups of semi-sweet chocolate chips over the hot toffee layer, allowing them to soften for 2-3 minutes.
  6. Add your choice of optional toppings while the chocolate is still warm, pressing them gently into the chocolate.
  7. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours until firm, then lift from the pan and cut into pieces.
