  • 1 package Phyllo Dough store-bought, kept wrapped to avoid drying
  • 1 pound Ground Beef can substitute with ground lamb or pork
  • 1 Onion finely chopped; can substitute with shallots or leeks
  • 1 cup Rice use brown rice or quinoa; pre-cook brown rice for tenderness
  • 1 cup Tomato Sauce crushed tomatoes or tomato paste can be used
  • 1 teaspoon Oregano Italian seasoning works as a substitute
  • to taste Salt and Pepper adjust according to preference
For Assembly
  • 1/2 cup Butter or Oil for brushing between phyllo layers

Method
 

Preparation Steps
  1. Sauté Onions: In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Cook Beef: Add ground beef, breaking it apart. Cook for 6-8 minutes until browned and no longer pink.
  3. Combine Filling: Stir rice, tomato sauce, oregano, salt, and pepper into the beef mixture. Add a splash of water and let simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Prep Phyllo Layers: Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F). Layer 5 sheets of phyllo in a buttered baking dish, brushing each with melted butter.
  5. Assemble Pie: Spread the beef and rice mixture over the first layer of phyllo. Top with 5 more layers of phyllo, brushing each with butter.
  6. Bake: Bake for 40-45 minutes until the top is golden and crisp.
  7. Cool and Slice: Let the pie cool for 10 minutes before slicing.
