- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
- In another bowl, mix unsweetened applesauce, milk, melted butter or oil, vanilla extract, and grated carrot until combined.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently to combine.
- Grease an 8-inch baking dish and pour in the batter, spreading evenly.
- Mix granulated sugar, brown sugar, and chopped walnuts or pecans, then sprinkle over the batter.
- Carefully pour very hot water over the mixture in the baking dish without stirring.
