Ingredients

Soup Base
  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable Oil Ideal for browning kielbasa and sautéing veggies; any neutral oil works well.
  • 12 ounces Kielbasa Adds garlicky, smoky flavor; feel free to substitute with Andouille, bratwurst, or bacon.
  • 1 medium Yellow Onion Enhances the broth’s savory profile; shallots can be a great swap.
  • 4 cloves Garlic Fresh minced garlic is best for flavor.
  • 2 medium Carrots Switch it up with other veggies like peas or diced potatoes.
  • 1 cup Savoy Cabbage Offers great texture; green cabbage works as a substitute.
  • 4 cups Chicken Broth Homemade is best, but store-bought works well.
  • 1 tablespoon Sweet Paprika Check that it’s fresh for optimal flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cumin Adjust to your liking or leave it out.
Creaminess
  • 8 ounces Cheese Spread Alternatives include cream cheese or heavy cream.
Star Ingredient
  • 1 package Pierogi Store-bought or homemade, filled with potato and cheddar or mushroom.
Finishing Touch
  • 0.5 cup Fresh Dill Avoid dried dill for the best flavor.

Equipment

  • Large pot

Method

Preparation
  1. Begin by preparing all your ingredients: slice kielbasa, dice onion, mince garlic, peel and cut carrots, and chop savoy cabbage.
  2. Roughly chop fresh dill and set everything aside.
Cooking Steps
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add kielbasa and brown for about 5 minutes, then set aside.
  2. In the same pot, sauté onion, garlic, and carrots for about 3 minutes until onions are translucent.
  3. Stir in paprika and cumin, pour in chicken broth, and bring to a boil. Add cabbage, cover, and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  4. Stir in cheese spread until melted, then add pierogi and cook until they float, about 3-5 minutes for fresh and 8 minutes for frozen.
  5. Remove from heat, stir in kielbasa, dill, and ground black pepper, and serve warm.
